harikapvs

One of the most basic yet effective ways to elevate a home is with window treatments. There are so many options out there that it can be very overwhelming. Blinds, roller shades, cellular shades are some of the options. However, choosing the right window treatment is very important because it serves multiple purposes- they provide privacy, conserve energy and add aesthetic value. One of the first things you ll need to consider when looking for the correct window treatment is purpose. What do you want to achieve, are you looking for privacy or are u looking to add some decor to the room ? Below I am going to break down some types of window treatments and how and what to choose depending on your needs.

Lets first talk about the various light filtering options which are common across all the different window treatments.

Sheer

Sheer does not allow for any privacy or light filtering but its great when you want to add a light weight fabric to your room to make it feel more airy.

Light Filtering

Light filtering option gives your room some privacy and diffuses 60% of the light. This option is usually the best for living, dining and family rooms. Keep in mind these are not blackout so at night onlookers might be able to see shadows of figures.

Blackout

Blackout option is pretty much what you would expect, maximum privacy and room darkening. This option is best for bedrooms and sometimes bathrooms depending on location.

Now that you have an idea about the different light filtering options, lets talk about types of window treatments.

Blinds

Venetian blinds are the most common. Venetian blinds are standard blinds with horizontal blades made of either metal, wood or plastic. These are highly effective in filtering light and providing privacy. Venetian blinds can be time consuming when it comes to cleaning them because they are wood/metal slats and therefore not on a top choice for most.

Shades

The three most common types of shades are roman, cellular and roller.

Roman shades are available in various types of fabrics and light filtering options. These shades are by far the most versatile window covering and can be customized to fit your needs. They are available in different folds and can add great aesthetic value to any room. The only drawback for roman shades is that they tend to be more expensive and not very budget friendly.

Cellular shades are much more budget friendly and easy to install, making them a great option for many. These shades are usually available in various light filtering options and provide great privacy. They are also very energy efficient and can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. The only drawback with these shades they are not the most aesthetically pleasing option. However, if you pair them with drapes you might be able to get the approval an interior designer.

Roller shades are great for commercial spaces or if you are going for the minimalist/industrial look. They come in various fabrics and materials with light filtering options. The only drawback for these shades is that they are not as energy efficient and do not provide the same type of insulation as a cellular shade might.

Drapes/Curtains

Drapes or curtains can add great aesthetic value to any room. They are very customizable and can fit any design style. Additionally, they can be paired along with either blinds or cellular shades. Their customizability and versatility makes them less affordable. Some design points to remember when installing drapes or curtains are- always hang drapes wide and high and make sure they just kiss the floor.

Hope this post helps you the next time you are in the window treatment aisle!
